Potable Water Manual

We at Ambio have extensive experience in potable water offshore. We have assisted many installations with the preparation of various documents, including potable water manuals. The framework regulations impose requirements for the preparation of a potable water manual, which is supplemented by drawings and maintenance systems.

 

The purpose of a potable water manual is to provide guidelines and instructions on how to control and operate the potable water system in order to fulfil the regulatory requirements and a company’s internal requirements. The goal is to ensure that an adequate amount of potable water that is hygienically safe, clear and without any special odour, taste or colour will always be available.

In addition to general information such as table of contents, references and page numbers, a potable water manual should contain information on the following points:

  • Management – division of responsibilities and training program, risk and vulnerability analysis, maintenance routines, chemical certification, contingency plans and handling of non-conformities
  • Water production – drawings and overview of seawater systems as well as discharges, chemical use, overview drawings of the production units, conductivity control
  • Bunkering – procedures and record keeping
  • Alkalisation filter – overview drawings, filter material, operating and maintenance procedures
  • Chlorination plants – overview drawings, dosage, concentration, type of chlorine, free chlorine level between 0.1-0.5 mg / l after bunkering
  • UV system – overview drawings, type approval, maximum disinfection capacity at worst current water quality, shut-off valve, alarm, operation and maintenance of the system
  • Potablewater tanks – operating routines, cleaning and disinfection, procedures for applying and curing paints and coatings, cleaning tanks such as water heaters, pressure tanks, etc.
  • Water supply network – cleaning and disinfection, operation and maintenance of any pressure tanks, connected systems, non-return devices, operation and procedures for avoiding stagnant water, routines for temperature control
  • Water quality logging – daily log, monthly and annual analysis program, description of measuring instrument, daily log for water production, troubleshooting routines

 

There is no explanation for how a potablewater manual should be designed, but the most important thing is that it is a functional document personnel actually know and are actively using.
